| June 2008 - WHEAT RUST ALERT!! |
|
OMAF has confirmed leaf rust in 4 locations in Ontario on Vienna wheat. Vienna is very susceptible to rust (FT Wonder and Carlisle are also fairly susceptible) and basically ALL VIENNA SHOULD GET FOLICUR. When we had a rust infestation a couple of years ago there were 20-30 bu/ac yield differences from sprayed vs. unsprayed. Levels are still low enough that we should be able to get through to fusarium timing (this will also give you as long of residual as possible on the flag leaf). Folicur is a better control than Proline on rust. Any other fields with any sign of rust should also be protected with Folicur. We aren’t sure if this is overwintering rust or where it came from. Rust in the US is still in the south and shouldn’t have moved here yet (rare for it to skip the northern states and arrive in Ontario 1st).
